“Homelessness is a big problem and we all need to come together to solve it.”

-Peter, Freshman, Otterbein College. Comment on evaluation form after a Speaker’s Bureau presentation.

This quote is a perfect illustration of why the Columbus Coalition for the Homeless maintains the Unsheltered Life and  Speaker’s Bureau programs.

As the problem of homelessness grows in our community no single organization, government entity, or private citizen will be able to meet the demand of those in need.

By educating those who live beyond the daily sight of homelessness, this Coalition hopes to promote an effective community response to a serious community problem.

Unsheltered Life
Unsheltered Life
is a five-part educational series about homelessness.  The series is designed for groups interested in taking an active role in bringing about the end of homelessness.  During the program participants explore their understanding of homelessness, hear the story of a formerly homeless person, spend "Three Day on the Streets" in a simulated experience of homelessness, and reflect on what it means to lose a home.  Finally, participants are challenged to set goals and develop action plans for their role in working toward the end of homelessness.  One recent participant stated, "I ignored it (homelessness) before, but I feel a need to do something now."

The series can be tailored to meet the content and time needs of most groups. We are always interested in fitting in with each group's needs and interests. Just let us know of your interest and we will work with you to give you a unique and a challenging educational experience.

There is an "Unsheltered Life" presentation from 9am-3:30pm on Saturday, August 16th. Call 228-1342 for details.

The Coalition also offers a Speaker's Bureau

What is a Speaker’s Bureau Presentation?
In short, a presentation of information about homelessness. Typically, a member of the Coalition staff will present basic information about homelessness, and then a currently or formerly homeless individual will share his/her story with the listeners. Presentations can be adapted to different age groups, special interests or time constraints.

Who Should Hear a Speaker’s Bureau Presentation?
Any group that has an interest in working toward ending homelessness in our community is invited, and encouraged, to request a Speaker’s Bureau presentation at their next meeting or group function. We can develop presentations for church groups, neighborhood groups, or community service organizations. We will provide a presentation for anyone who is willing to learn about homelessness and become an active part of the solution.

How Much Does It Cost?
The Columbus Coalition for the Homeless believes that Speaker’s Bureau presentations are a profitable investment to increasing knowledge and awareness of homelessness. Thus, there is no set charge for our presentations. We do request that if a homeless or formerly homeless person participates in the program that $25 be given to that individual. And we encourage donations to our work based on the length of the presentation and the ability of the host group to pay.
